Federico Montesanto

Pirames International

Federico Montesanto was born in Rome to Amalfi-born parents—his father an engineer, his mother a musician. From them he inherited the two elements that would shape his entire path: a passion for technology and a deep connection to music. While studying Mechanical Engineering with a focus on robotics, he began working part-time in a recording studio, where he founded his first independent label and his first management company.

The early loss of both parents forced a difficult choice: continue his studies or enter the industry full-time. Choosing the latter, he soon had the opportunity to join Zomba Jive Italy as an A&R, during a period when the company was developing major projects for artists such as Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, N’Sync, 2Pac, and Tool.

After Zomba, Federico took time to broaden his perspective, traveling from the Arctic Circle to the equator and spending nearly three years in Africa. When he returned to Europe, he was involved in an international production that ultimately failed, costing him significant resources — but this happened just as the digital era was emerging. Instead of stepping back, he recognized that the future of music would be defined by data, rights management, and infrastructure. XML formats, the first DDEX standards, and the early API environment were challenging for the industry but familiar to him — an engineering problem waiting to be solved.

In 2005 he founded Pirames International, building proprietary architectures capable of processing, validating, and monetizing large-scale catalogs. Over time Pirames grew in parallel with the digital market, adapting to the rise of Content ID, streaming platforms, and modern metadata standards, always without outside capital. Today Pirames operates on 200+ platforms, manages millions of tracks and videos, and maintains ISO 27001–certified workflows for all of its data management processes — all developed in-house — such as ingestion, delivery, reporting, and rights management.

Alongside digital distribution and large-scale catalog management, the company also provides copyright protection, content development, and neighboring rights collecting for artists and producers, as well as a dedicated delivery platform for top-tier clients requiring advanced, customized, data-driven technological services.

Proudly rooted in Italy and operating for over 14 years also in the United States, Pirames today represents more than 15,000 labels, producers, and creators — including a significant portion of Italy’s cultural heritage, with catalogs from Mina, Fabrizio De André, Adriano Celentano, Nicola Di Bari, PFM, Franco Battiato, Ludovico Einaudi, Ennio Morricone, and many others.

Rather than positioning itself as a model, Pirames focuses on doing the work: developing reliable systems, refining processes, and applying an engineering-driven approach to music rights and data. Its international growth follows the same principle — sharing experience where useful, collaborating with partners, and contributing to a global ecosystem where technology supports culture with accuracy, transparency, and respect.
