[Weekly Sales] P!nk Scores 2017’s Best Sales Week for a Woman: Comment from Music Biz President James Donio

James Donio, President of the Music Business Association (Music Biz), commented on this week’s sales numbers issued by Nielsen (published by Billboard — albumssingles) and BuzzAngle Music (published by HITS Daily Double — albumssingles).

“Pop veteran P!nk dominated the Nielsen and BuzzAngle Music charts this week with her new album, Beautiful Trauma, moving over 407,000 album equivalent units to take #1. It’s the biggest sales week for a woman so far in 2017 and the fourth-best week overall, trailing only Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and Ed Sheeran. The album’s larger-than-expected sales were powered by a concert ticket/album bundle offer, a strategy that has proven increasingly popular this year, as well as appearances on major TV shows such as CBS’ Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live, and ABC’s Good Morning America. Other notable debuts came from Rapper Gucci Mane, who reached #2 with Mr. Davis; Alternative Rock mainstay Beck, who reached #3 on the Billboard 200 and #4 on the BuzzAngle Music chart with Colors, and Indie Rocker St. Vincent, who reach #10 on the Billboard 200 with Masseduction.

“Meanwhile, Post Malone held on to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and BuzzAngle Top Songs charts for the second week in a row with ‘Rockstar’ featuring 21 Savage. In addition, Rock bands Portugal. The Man and Imagine Dragons both placed in the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Feel It Still’ and ‘Thunder,’ respectively. It’s the first time in over a decade that two different Rock bands have placed in the Top 5 at the same time, with the last instance coming way back in 2007 with Fall Out Boy and Daughtry.

“Next week, we’ll be watching to see whether Niall Horan can become the third former member of One Direction to score a #1 album with Flicker and if Taylor Swift can retake the singles charts with ‘Gorgeous.’”
