[WEEKLY SALES] Foo Fighters Notch #1 Album Spot; Cardi B’s ‘Bodak Yellow’ Bows Big
James Donio, President of the Music Business Association (Music Biz), commented on this week’s sales numbers issued by Nielsen (published in Billboard: albums, singles) and Border City Media (published in HITS Daily Double: albums).
“Veteran Rock band Foo Fighters jumped to the top of the Nielsen and BuzzAngle Music charts this week, moving over 127,000 album equivalent units of Concrete and Gold to reach the #1 spot. It’s the band’s second chart-topper and eighth Top 10 album, as well as the fifth Rock album to reach the summit this year. It was also a huge week for K-Pop, with South Korean act BTS hitting #7 on both charts with Love Yourself: Her. It’s the highest chart position and biggest sales week for any K-Pop group in the U.S. The band’s massive following on social media likely contributed to their sales success, with BTS’ fans mounting a fierce campaign to raise awareness and drive sales. Country duo Big & Rich scored this week’s final Top 10 debut, landing at #9 on the Billboard 200 with Did It for the Party.
“On the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Cardi B’s ‘Bodak Yellow’ dethroned Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ to become the first female rapper to reach #1 without any featured artists in nearly two decades. The only other female rapper to achieve this feat was Lauryn Hill with ‘Doo Wop (That Thing)’ back in 1998. Post Malone, featuring 21 Savage, also scored a huge chart debut for ‘Rockstar,’ landing at #2 and giving him his second Top 10 single. Finally, Rock group Portugal. The Man picked up their first Top 10 single with ‘Feel It Still’ at #10.
“Next week, we’ll be watching to see whether The Killers can notch a sixth #1 album for Rock with Wonderful Wonderful or if they will be blocked by Macklemore’s Gemini.”
