[WEEKLY SALES] Drake’s ‘More Life’ Spends Second Week at #1
James Donio, President of the Music Business Association (Music Biz), commented on this week’s sales numbers issued by Nielsen (published in Billboard) and Border City Media (published in HITS Daily Double).
After the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reported last week that streaming had become the chief source of music industry revenue for the first time ever, it is fitting that this week’s #1 album on the Nielsen and BuzzAngle Music charts be powered chiefly by streaming equivalent albums (SEAs). That album is Drake’s More Life, which notches its second straight week at the top with an SEA tally that nearly quadruples its traditional album sales. It’s Drake’s 20th total week at #1 in his career, putting him behind only three other Hip-Hop artists (Eminem, Jay Z, and M.C. Hammer) for most overall weeks at the summit. R&B artist Trey Songz also debuted strongly this week with new album Tremaine, which reached #3 on both charts. Next week, we’ll be watching to see how new albums from Bob Dylan, Mastodon, MercyMe, Kodak Black, Nelly Furtado, and more will fare.”
