January 9, 2017 – Music Subscriptions Passed 100 Million In December. Has The World Changed?

In streaming’s earlier years, when doubts prevailed across the artist, songwriter and label communities, one of the arguments put forward by enthusiasts was that when streaming reached scale everything would make sense. When asked what ‘scale’ meant, the common reply was ‘100 million subscribers’. January 6, 2017 – British Retail Group Points to Music as Entertainment’s Fastest-Growing Sector

Music revenues in the U.K. grew by 4.6 percent in 2016 — driving music, video and games sales to an all-time high of £6.3 billion ($7.8 billion), according to annual figures from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA). In line with figures released earlier this week by labels trade body BPI, increased take-up of streaming subscription services was a key factor in boosting revenues, with streaming sales totaling £418 million ($514 million) in 2016, up 65 percent on last year when streaming generated just over £250 million ($307 million).... Music Biz President James Donio released the following statement on the 2016 end-of-year sales and consumption reports released by BuzzAngle Music and Nielsen (published in Billboard): “For the second straight year, overall music consumption was notably up, strengthening hopes for a new era of music industry growth driven largely by on-demand streaming. January 5, 2017 – Drake’s ‘Views’ Is Nielsen Music’s Top Album of 2016 in the U.S.

Drake caps a banner year, as his smash album Views finishes 2016 as the most popular release of the year in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music. The data tracking company reports that the title earned 4.14 million equivalent album units during the year — with 1.61 million of that sum coming from traditional album sales. January 4, 2017 – Still a Fad? Vinyl Records Return to 1991 Sales Levels

It’s been a storied resurgence for vinyl records, which now include LP, EPs, and even 45s.  Once considered a short-lived fad, this comeback has been going for ten strong years. And, counting. According to the latest data, sales of vinyl records are now back to early-1990s volumes. Music Biz member BuzzAngle Music is proud to release its first-ever yearly report, on 2016 U.S. music consumption. 2016 was another successful year in music, with overall consumption rising 4.2% over 2015, marking the second year in a row with solid growth. The continued explosion of audio stream consumption, which increased 82.6% to 250B streams, fueled this increase.
