Streaming is exploding.  But a majority of the revenue in the music industry is coming from live events.  According to US-based calculations shared by PwC with Digital Music News, ticket sales alone account for 43% of all revenues, with festivals driving the growth.  Big brand sponsorships at events count for another 12%. May 24, 2017 – Global Music Merch Biz Grew to $3.1 Billion in 2016: Study

Music merchandising retail sales was one of the fastest growing property type percentage-wise for 2016, according to the international Licensing Industry Merchandisers Association’s annual survey. While all categories of licensed goods and services globally hit nearly $263 billion, which represented a 4.4% increase from the prior year, the music merchandise category grew at more than double that pace. Music consumption in Canada continues to rise. Ninety-three percent of Canadians listen to music, up from 89% a year ago. May 3, 2017 – These Are the Top-Selling Albums & Singles of Record Store Day 2017, As Vinyl Album Sales Surge 213%

The 10th installment of Record Store Day (April 22) continued to drive big sales of music at independent retailers, according to Nielsen Music. The company reports that in the tracking week ending April 27, album sales at indie stores increased 194 percent compared to the previous week — the largest weekly gain in the retail sector in the history of Record Store Day. Garden Auditorium, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 7/29/66 by Grateful Dead was the top selling album on Record Store Day, while Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles was the top selling single.
